When I laid my guns down, I thought you would marry me
I played that horn under the willow tree
I saw the ghost in the lake with electric eyes
all fire and smoke in the night sky
shes every color you've ever seen
she'll cut you down to your knees
she'll drain your blood down to the bone
you would gladly invite this woman into your home
i was wiser once, i can be wiser still
im not the same man but ive got the same will
i get older now , i learn how to lie
wont you write something nice about me when I die
i got big brown eyes to stare you down
from across the room in your wedding gown
i sold that ring and pawned it for cash
i bought myself a coffin made out of brass
from melted down horns with copper tones
the mouth piece from my uncles trombone
he went off traveling when i was a kid
he sent me pictures of this spanish woman he loved in madrid
he said "you cant let'm get you down"
"you can dance on my grave when i leave this town"
and if the storms rise and im swallowed by the sea
then i'll visit you in a dream
i am the cactus , i am the desert dry
the vultures circle above in the sky
theres always two roads from which to choose
but are you sorry for the things you do?
its funk and its soul, its late night
its better than it was with my first wife
its not heaven or hell, its someplace in between
its an open room with wooden floors and japanese screens
when i finish my painting, when my novel's complete
when i walk across the coals on my bare feet
when my mother sees what i have become
then you can judge me on all the songs i have sung
well im alright, the brush is still in play
i took a breath of city air and i begged her to stay
i'm still writing because i'm still moved to write
if we have to leave does it have to be tonight
well i got big plans to leave this town
i was younger then , but im older now
i follow them wolves wherever they go
and i was made to roam
When I laid my guns down, I thought you would marry me
I played that horn under the willow tree
I saw the ghost in the lake with electric eyes
all fire and smoke in the night sky
